When you’re taking care of an elderly loved one, there are times that you need help from other family members. Often, however, you’re likely to hear back that it isn’t possible for them to help. Elderly-Care-in-Ranch- Cordova-CAWhile most of these reasons are valid, they can still feel hurtful and more like an excuse than anything else.

Lack of Time

Everybody is short on time, but this is probably the most common reason you’ll receive from other family members about why they can’t help out with your elderly loved one. One response that you can give to another family member is that they don’t have to spend a lot of time. If your other relative can run a few quick errands or handle something administrative for you, that can help a lot. Many of those tasks don’t take up a lot of time, either.

Lack of Money

Not having enough money has a huge impact on how helpful other people can be when you’re caring for your elderly loved one. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re asking for monetary help, but it can mean that the other family members can’t take time away from work or afford to visit your loved one more often. There are ways around this, however, especially if they are able to virtually visit with your loved one through either video communication or via telephone.

Inability to Cope

Some people see their elderly loved one in need of help and are able to just do what needs to be done. Others find it more difficult to do that, and that doesn’t make them a bad person, it just means that they find it easier to back away from caregiving. This is even easier for them when someone else is able to step up to the plate. It’s difficult to watch an elderly loved one’s health decline or help them through a difficult or embarrassing situation, but sometimes it just has to be done.

What You Can Do

You can’t make siblings or other family members help out in the care of your elderly loved one. It’s understandable if you’re frustrated or angry, but that doesn’t do anything for anyone. Instead, try to let it go and simply take care of what needs to be done for your elderly loved one. Finding elderly care providers gives you respite and helps your loved one to have better care. Contact elderly agencies in your area to find local resources.

Getting help from other family members is nice, but it can’t be forced.
