What You Will Need

For the meat

• 1 1/2 pounds of lean ground beef

• 1 tablespoon of ketchup

• 1/2 cup of seasoned breadcrumbs

• 2 teaspoons of dry mustard

• 4 dashes of Worcestershire sauce

• 1 cube of beef bouillon, crumbled

• Salt

• Pepper

• 1 tablespoon of butter

• 1 tablespoon of olive oil

• Skillet

• Medium mixing bowl

For the gravy

• 1 whole onion, halved and thinly sliced or diced, depending on preference

• 2 cups of beef broth, plus a little extra aside in case of thinning

• 1 tablespoon of ketchup

• 4 dashes of Worcestershire sauce

• 1 teaspoon of seasoning sauce

• 1 teaspoon of cornstarch

• Salt

• Pepper

• Skillet

What to Do

• Combine the ground beef with the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, breadcrumbs, bouillon, and salt and pepper

• Put the ground beef into the mixing bowl and add in the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce

• Knead or stir the mixture until well-combined

• Add in the dry mustard, bouillon, breadcrumbs, and salt and pepper

• Knead the meat mixture until it is all combined and evenly mixed. Using your hands is the easiest and fastest way to accomplish this, but you can use a spoon or a mashed potato masher if you prefer not to touch the meat

• Form 4 to 6 oval patties, making sure to pinch the middle just a bit to reduce puffing during the cooking process

• If you would like the classic presentation, use your fingers or a fork to make lines across the patties to give them a steak like appearance

• Put the skillet on medium high heat and melt butter with oil, heating until the oil shimmers

• Fry the patties in the skillet until they are no longer pink in the middle

• Remove from the skillet and pour off excess grease. Be careful to dispose of this properly to prevent burns

• Reduce the heat to medium

• Add the sliced onions to the skillet

• Stir and cook until they are golden brown and somewhat soft

• Add the beef stock, seasoning sauce, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce

• Combine the cornstarch with a little beef broth in a separate bowl and then add to the sauce

• Stir and cook to reduce

• Add a sprinkle of pepper or salt and more broth if needed for thinning

• Return the patties to the gravy in the skillet now

• Spoon the gravy over the top of the steaks and allow to simmer and heat back up

• After a few minutes of heating, remove from the skillet and arrange on the plate

• Serve while still hot
