Have you been in charge of caring for your elderly parent? If so, you may be finding that the coronavirus stay-at-home order or social distancing guidelines are keeping you from caring for your elderly parent like you used to. The good news is that there are some things that you can do to continue taking care of your elderly parent without going to see them.
Organizing Their Financial, Legal, and Other Documents
One of the things that you can continue doing from a distance is to continue to organize your elderly parent’s financial, legal, and other documents. You can log into their bank account and balance their checkbook, help them create a will if they don’t have one, and organize documents through Google Drive. By doing this, you can keep everything in order, even despite the coronavirus pandemic.
Automation Can Help
Since you can’t physically go to your parent’s home and help them pay their bills, maybe you could help them to set up automatic payments. You can log into the websites for their utility and phone company and set up automatic withdrawals from their bank account. If they have any other bills that allow for automatic payments, you can do this for those, too. By setting up automatic payments, this is one less thing that your elderly parent needs to deal with. There is already so much going on with the COVID-19 pandemic, that automating bills can be a huge relief.
Getting the Help Your Parent Needs
Since you can’t go to your elderly parent’s home right now, it may be time to hire more time for the caregivers to come to help your parent out. For instance, if your parent’s caregivers used to come only once or twice a week, now it might be best to have them come help out four or five days a week. Without having family members or friends around to help out, your elderly parent may need more assistance from their caregivers.
Utilize Technology
To keep caring for your elderly parent from a distance, you can also utilize technology. You can call or text your parent every day or every other day to check up on them. You can make live video calls to keep in touch with your elderly parent, as well. This will help you to keep in touch with your elderly parent, make sure everything is alright, and see if they need anything.
These are some of the ways that you can keep caring for your elderly parent from a distance. You don’t have to let COVID-19 keep you from caring for your elderly parent.
