Are you the type of person who just can’t seem to say no? You’re a caring, nurturing person by nature, which makes it difficult for you to say no when someone asks for help. What about when you have a job, family, and other obligations? What would happen when someone you care about comes to you or indicates that they need help, such as an elderly loved one?
In that case, you may feel guilty if you’re unable to be there for them, but they don’t need to feel completely alone. Home care services can help.
Acknowledging that you can’t be there for everyone.
Your life is precious to you. Even if you have an elderly parent who is in need, who is struggling with his or her own care at home, this doesn’t mean that you should give up your life to help them. You can certainly do whatever you might be able to in order to make their life more comfortable, or easier, but you should never sacrifice your health or well-being in order to be there for them.
While this situation (a parent or other elderly loved one needing help as they age) is becoming more common as the Baby Boomers reach retirement age, it’s also more common that many households rely on two incomes to get by. That may mean that you simply don’t have the time needed to devote to your elderly loved one.
It’s important to admit that, but what about that guilt? What about those feelings that you may have that could make you feel as though you’ve made the wrong decision? In those cases, you need to accept that there are plenty of quality and viable options. You don’t need to agree to be the in home care provider for them.
How can you stop feeling guilty?
One of the first things that you can do when you’re feeling guilty about saying no is to remind yourself that you matter, too. You might not think that you do, at least not when someone you love needs help, but you do. Your parents devoted their lives to helping you achieve your dreams, so if you end up sacrificing them, it’s defeating that purpose to some degree.
You matter. They matter. Sometimes, though, knowing that they will be better served by home care services, both in time and skill, is the best option in the long run.
