Elder Care in Folsom CA: Vehicle Safety Suggestions for Senior Drivers

Many seniors are still mobile and provide their own means of transportation.  According to the Center for Disease Control, there were over 40 million licensed drivers over the age of 65 in the United States, as of 2015.  And while maintaining their ability to transport themselves is great, there are things that caregivers can do to help insure elder care and safety is maintained for senior drivers.

Many car companies today offer driving features with consideration of elder care.  Some of these include:

  • Larger displays on dashboards
  • Brighter headlights for better visibility
  • Thicker steering wheels for seniors with hand issues such as arthritis
  • Push-button starters rather than key ignitions to also help with hand issues
  • Rear cameras and blind spot warnings

And with better ability for seniors to handle the vehicle, it keeps them and those around them safer.  Yet, there are still some factors to consider for seniors who are driving.  For instance, entering and exiting the vehicle can be a challenge if the access is too high.

This situation could also cause problems for the senior if he or she can’t see the condition of the ground as they are exiting the vehicle; potentially causing a fall or slip.  So seniors should avoid driving in vehicles that aren’t easy for them to get in and out of.

Another issue is related to vision.  It is recommended that seniors who drive get their vision tested annually.  Vision changes with age and it’s important to keep eyeglass prescriptions updated.  Too, over time, seniors may recognize that they have a more difficult time seeing at night and should avoid doing so.

Caregivers can assist with elder care for senior drivers by making sure the vehicle is properly maintained.  This could include:

  • Regular oil changes
  • Checking tire pressure
  • Making sure all windows are clean and not cracked, chipped or broken

A few additional tips for senior drives are to:

  • Use turn signals whenever you anticipate turning
  • Allow extra room in front of you for stopping traffic
  • Always check mirrors and seat position when getting into the car to drive
  • Use the seatbelt
  • Have a charged mobile phone available in case you need assistance
  • Let others know where you are going so they can expect you

While seniors who are able to drive allows for independence, caregivers can help by making sure the vehicle is in good condition for the journey.
