How Safe Is Your Senior’s Bedroom?

Elderly Care Folsom, CA: Senior's and Bedroom Safety

Have you given much thought to specific safety concerns in your senior’s bedroom? It might be time to do so.

Lighting Is a Concern Everywhere

Elderly Care Folsom, CA: Senior’s and Bedroom Safety

Even if you’ve checked the lighting throughout the house, double check the lighting in your senior’s bedroom. Lots of people don’t have lighting they can really use in their bedrooms, especially if they don’t spend a ton of time there. Make existing lighting easier to use, especially if your elderly family member has mobility issues. A night light might be a good idea, too.

Check for Excess Clutter and Tripping Hazards

Lighting is extremely helpful in avoiding tripping hazards, but it’s even better to remove them from your senior’s path. Anything that could be a hazard, from cords to furniture to discarded clothing should all have another home if they’re currently in your senior’s path. If your elderly family member has a strong attachment to some of her belongings, she might not see them as clutter. It might be necessary to have a heart to heart about some of the items blocking her path.

Figure out How Your Senior Could Get Help from Bed

Having a phone next to her bed or even using a personal alarm system could be the right answer if your senior needs to get help while she’s still in bed. It’s important to ensure that if she has a problem and can’t get anyone’s attention, she still has a way to get someone to help her. Some home alarm systems now have a way to contact help from anywhere in the house, so that might be worth looking into.

Look for Ways to Add Support, if Necessary

Something else to consider is that your elderly family member could need additional support as she moves through her bedroom. If she becomes injured or if she has mobility issues, it helps to have something she can lean on, like sturdy handrails. Although she might not be a fan of this idea, bed rails or even assistive devices like a cane can help her to get out of bed if she needs some extra support.

Keeping your senior’s bedroom as safe as possible can help her to sleep better at night, too. When she’s worried about getting up in the middle of the night or other related concerns, she won’t necessarily relax. Having help overnight from elderly care providers can also help. If your senior needs help in the middle of the night, they can meet her needs.
