Fair Oaks, CA – Caffeine and How It Impacts Elder Care

If you’re an avid coffee drinker, you probably consume quite a bit of caffeine every day. Below are some interesting facts about caffeine you might not have known and then we’ll explain how it can impact elder care.Elder Care Fair Oaks CA

1. Today’s energy drinks pale in comparison to the amount of caffeine found in Starbucks coffee. These new energy drinks are loaded with caffeine, and while they get an incredible amount of attention in news media lately with regard to that fact, they still don’t match up with Starbucks.

2. On average, people drink less coffee today than they did in the 1950s. This doesn’t mean that caffeine consumption is down, thanks to those energy drinks, but people have a tendency to drink less coffee than they did 60 years ago.

3. It doesn’t take a lot of caffeine to become dependent. Just 100 mg of caffeine consumed every day is more than enough to get hooked. That’s equivalent to about 5 or 8 ounces of coffee every day. When a person tries to stop their coffee or soda intake, he or she could experience some caffeine withdrawal symptoms.

4. It takes approximately eight hours for caffeine to completely leave your system. That means if the elderly home care client drinks coffee at two in the afternoon and finishes it by three, there could still be caffeine in their system at 10 or 11 o’clock at night.

So how do these interesting tidbits of information impact elder care? If the senior is having difficulty falling asleep at night, can’t seem to settle down in the evening, or wakes up numerous times throughout the night and then has difficulty falling back to sleep, it could be directly connected to caffeine.

The senior certainly has every right to drink coffee, tea, soda, or anything else he or she wants.  However, if they’re having difficulty sleeping at night the caregiver can inform them about the impact caffeine could be having on their health and overall well-being.

March is National Caffeine Awareness Month and it’s a good time to discuss the impact that drinking coffee, tea, and even soda could be having on their health. It may be related to prescription medications and not caffeine when it comes to difficulty sleeping, but curtailing the amount of caffeine for a week or more could help to determine its actual impact on their ability to sleep soundly throughout the night.
