Caregiving is a rewarding but challenging and demanding job. Many caregivers welcome the help of the tools and technology available at their disposal. In this ever changing world, technology is constantly advancing making things a bit easier. The following technology may be helpful to a caregiver.
A Pill Dispenser
Some elderly seniors take a variety of medications for various health conditions. This can be confusing and lead to taking medications at the wrong time or forgetting to take them at all. A pill dispenser can be the perfect tool for helping a senior stay independent longer especially if memory or confusion regarding prescriptions is the biggest reason for their need of in-home care provider. Pill dispensers are equipped with timers alarms, and some can even communicate with cell phones and computers.
GPS Tracking
This increasingly popular system uses a chip that can be activated through a paid GPS tracking subscription. It is especially good for home care providers who take care of patients with Alzheimer’s. Shoes or other items of clothing have a microchip built in. GPS tracking is also useful for elders who don’t have Alzheimer’s or dementia. An elder who doesn’t arrive home when expected can be tracked in case of an emergency.
Sensors and Cameras
Sensors and cameras can be installed in an elder’s home allowing you to keep track of them from your computer. Any inactivity for a predetermined amount of time in a specific area will send an alert to you through the computer. While some caregivers debate the invasion of privacy issue regarding cameras tracking an elder’s movements, some find them to be helpful as an extra safety precaution.
Smart Phone Apps
With most people living vicariously through their smart phones these days why not take advantage of the apps for caregivers? Some apps are very basic for medication and appointment reminders. Others are more advanced and include electronic folders for more in-depth medical information. Many caregivers find these apps easy to use and love the fact that information is quick to access. Some of the basic apps are free but the advanced apps require a fee.
It is amazing what can be accomplished due to the incredible growth of technology. There are options available today that you wouldn’t have even imagined a few years ago. Thanks to today’s technology, there are many ways for a caregiver to gain the help and support they need.
