When your parents get older, you may notice they aren’t as active as they used to be. This is common in the elderly. When it comes to elder care, however, you want to make sure your parents are keeping as active as they can be. They don’t want to overdo it, but they can still get up and move around some. Before you read some of the tips for keeping your aging parent active, remember to keep in mind their physical state and any chronic conditions they have.
Taking a Walk with Them
You might want to schedule a weekly walk with your aging parent. This will get them up and moving. It will get them active, so they aren’t as sedentary. If you can’t get to your parents on a weekly basis, maybe call and remind them to take at least one walk each week. They should be walking more than that, but a minimum of once per week can help a great deal. It doesn’t need to be a long walk, maybe just around their neighborhood or down the block and back. This not only gets them exercising but gets them fresh air, too.
Senior Exercise Program
Many communities have a senior exercise program. This may be a time of the week where seniors get together and go for a walk. It might be a time when seniors do an exercise or fitness class. You can check with your parent’s community to see what type of senior exercise programs they have available. When it comes to elder care, exercise is important.
Senior Citizen Groups
It might be helpful to get your aging parents involved in senior citizen groups. Even if they don’t exercise much, they might do other things. They may go out shopping together. In addition, your parents might find some friends to do things with, as well.
Hosting a Coffee Date
If your parents still drive, you can offer to host a coffee date. They can meet you at a local coffee shop. You could also bring some coffee to a local park and they could meet you there. You could then go on a walk together. If your parents can’t drive, you can offer to drive them to a friend’s house for coffee, too.
Video Calling
While it doesn’t involve getting up and moving around, being active is more than just that. Your parents, especially as they get older, need to keep socializing. This will help to prevent them from getting lonely. If you can teach your parents to video call, they can keep in touch with family members and friends.
When it comes to elder care, it is very important that your parents keep active. These are just some of the many ways they can do that. Start working on helping your parents with this today. Suggest just one thing for them to begin with and go from there.
